My Daily Communion

By: Vicki White

When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ?  ~ 1 Corinthians 10:16

Some time ago, I began taking Communion as part of my daily quiet time. This precious time has become a touchpoint to remind me of what Jesus has done, and to draw me close to Him as I begin my day. My morning Communion is a deeply personal time with Jesus, so rather than reciting a pre-written liturgy, I use my own words as I approach His Throne of Grace. I have written an example of what I do each morning as a point of reference for those who may not quite know how to approach a private time of Communion with the Lord, but I urge you to make it yours; make it a deeply personal time between you and Jesus, your Savior.

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, as I approach Your Communion Table this morning, I pause at Your altar to remember all You have done for me. Just as You laid down Your life for me, I lay my life on Your altar and invite you to come live in me and through me this day. Because of what You did for me, I can enter the Holy of Holies and speak with our Father face-to-face. Your Holy Spirit lives inside of me, and I no longer fear death but have the promise of eternal life with You in Heaven. I can hear my Father’s voice and be assured that He hears my every prayer; I can rest in His promises and know that I am cleansed of all sin. Because of Your sacrifice, Lord Jesus, I am set free and protected from enslavement to the sins, afflictions, and addictions that the enemy would send against me to derail my faith. Because of You, I have all power and authority over the evil one, and I can rest in the assurance that I am fully known and fully loved. Thank You for what You have done for me. Oh, Jesus, how I love You, my precious Lord & Savior!

Blessing the Elements:  As I come to Your Table, Lord, I ask that You bless, anoint, and consecrate this bread and this cup as the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Just as You instructed Your disciples, I take the bread and cup, symbols of Your body and blood that were broken and shed for me on Calvary’s Cross. I do this as I remember Your sacrifice; the greatest sacrifice the world has ever known, evidence of the greatest love the world has ever known, that resulted in the greatest victory the world will ever know - Your victory over sin, death, darkness, and the grave. Yours is the victory, Lord, and Yours is the Glory, forever and ever.

The Body of Christ:  I take this bread, the Body of Christ broken for me, and as I eat it, we become one; You in me, and I in You. By Your stripes, Lord Jesus, I am healed. (Eat the bread.)

The Cup:  I take this cup, the Blood of Jesus Christ shed for me, and as I drink it, I am cleansed, consecrated and anointed to be Your Holy Vessel; a pure and holy place where Your Holy Spirit is welcome, comfortable, and pleased to dwell. As Your holy vessel on this earth, I ask that You pour Your life-giving light, love, power, and authority into and through me to bless and change the world around me. Let me be a beacon of Your light today. (Drink the cup.)

Final Prayer: Lord Jesus, as I go into my day, help me be continually mindful of Your Presence within me everywhere I go. Let my every thought, word, and deed bring honor, glory and praise to You, my precious and beloved Lord & Savior. I am Yours and You are mine, forever and ever, it is in Your holy Name I pray, amen.

Breath Prayer:

Breathe In:  Come, Lord Jesus.

Breathe Out: You in me and I in You.
